Once you set the "hot/cold" mixture rate you like (with the cross handle valve), the temperature will always stay within 1 degree Fahrenheit of that same temperature level. Then, there is a second lever handle valve that controls the actual "On/Off" of the water flow.

This unit comes with an 8-inch diameter, 2 gallon per minute rain shower head and a precise temperature control device for setting a consistent and safe temperature. Many county codes are now requiring "anti-scald" devices like this in new construction plumbing.
